In 2023, our RAFIKI partner the H3D Foundation, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and LifeArc, founded the Grand Challenges African Drug Discovery Accelerator (GC ADDA): an initiative establishing a sustainable network that accelerates drug discovery for unmet medical needs in Africa.
The network aims to develop and retain a critical mass of talented researchers in Africa while creating regional centers of excellence that nourish the drug discovery pipeline. The overall objective is to help build a future where African patients thrive from innovative drug discovery solutions tailored to their health needs.
By 2024, the network linked eight African countries and launched an initial four flagship projects focused on infectious disease and drug discovery research. Seven RAFIKI partners are involved in the GC ADDA network:
- H3D Foundation
- Drug Discovery Unit, University of Dundee
- Drug Innovation Group, University of Ghana
- Kenya Medical Research Institute
- Stellenbosch University
- Holistic Drug Discovery and Development (H3D) Centre, University of Cape Town
- University of Zambia
- Medicines for Malaria Venture
